Free Yourself from Personal Debt
Like many things we'd like to change in our lives, reducing personal debt is much easier said than done. In order to get real control of our personal finances, we have to get a real handle on debt. But, knowing exactly how to deal with that debt can seem like a monumental challenge.
So what's the simplest way to deal with your personal debt? Exactly the same way anyone should approach any task that initially seems overwhelming — one step at a time.
Living in a credit-based society, it's difficult to get away from using the plastic for smaller everyday needs. Spending with credit, while trying to pay off credit debt, is redundant. It's going to make the payback process harder because the payoff amount will keep growing.
Choose one major credit card that has the lowest interest and save it for emergencies only. If you have more than one (and who doesn't?), only carry one with you and safely store the rest in a place where they can't be used. Don't touch them until they are paid off.
Focus on the budget you've already made and take a deep breath. Rest assured, we don't want to eliminate credit cards entirely. We're just eliminating them long enough to pay off any outstanding balances and regain financial footing. In fact, keeping a low-interest credit card at a zero balance, and in good standing, will help continuously improve your credit score.
As you begin to earn more than you are spending, choose the credit card with the highest interest rate, and begin paying it off in allotments that are greater than the minimum balance. In most cases, the minimum balance is replaced by interest as soon as it is taken off the balance. Also, make your payments on time. This way you are avoiding late fees as well as any additional charges on your credit card.
If you're not sure how much you can afford to pay out each month, try using finance software or consulting a financial advisor. But keep it up, eliminate your luxuries and spend only what you must. Follow these steps, and you'll have your debt paid off in no time.
