Financial Safety Abroad
Seasoned travelers are familiar with the financial risks involved with international voyages. Although you should never allow paranoia to inhibit your travel experience, it helps to be aware of possible pitfalls. As a tourist in another country, you are likely to be recognized by pickpockets and other thieves. The budget you have carefully prepared for your international vacation can be gone in an instant if you're not careful.
Staying financially safe while going abroad requires both preparation and observation. Here, we've made a list of a few rules to follow to keep your trip safe and you wallet full while you enjoy your international experience. Take a look and see what you can do to keep your finances safe.
Obtain Local Currency
The American dollar is one of the most recognizable currencies in the world. Because of this, carrying American currency is often a flag for pickpockets. To help avoid this problem, obtain a small amount of local currency for spending money, and keep the bills small, as well. Thieves will be less likely to target someone who's carrying only a modest amount of cash.
Be Aware of Conversion Rates
When you convert your currency, choose a reputable exchange center, such as a bank, a post office, or a hotel. Smaller exchanges, especially those located in airports, may offer unfair rates or may not be legitimate. Make sure you are clear on the process, and speak to someone in person. If you feel uncomfortable or are unable to overcome a language barrier, choose another place to obtain local funds.
Open a Hotel Safe
If you're staying at a hotel, you may want to consider keeping Social Security cards, jewelry, and other small valuables in a safe. Most franchise hotels will allow you to store certain items at the front desk for safe deposit. Use your best judgment to decide where your small valuables will be safest.
Use a Money Belt
For days when you want to carry credit cards or extra American currency, invest in a money belt. They can generally be worn inconspicuously under your clothing, where they are out of the reach from pickpockets. Be aware that small wallets designed to be worn around the neck and shoulder should have a wire woven into the strap to be effective. A determined pickpocket may try to cut the strap, and the wire makes that more difficult.
Remember to keep a positive attitude and enjoy your trip, but keep your eyes open as well. By safeguarding against pickpockets, you can eliminate your risk and get back to exploring your destination.
