Using Tax Software and Online Tools for Filing Tax Returns
Using tax software is one of the simplest, least expensive ways to file your taxes. Many different companies produce tax-filing software that will both guide you through preparing your tax returns and allow you to e-file directly with the IRS. This software is typically both available for direct download online or from a local electronics retailer.
While this is an increasingly popular choice with many people, remember that you still need to come prepared; even the best tax software can't fill the blanks for missing or inaccurate information.
When considering whether or not you'd like to use tax software for preparing and filing your taxes, keep the following in mind:
Most tax software will update itself automatically, or on command using your Internet connection. This will change the process to reflect any recent changes to tax law, making the forms you fill out accurate.
Simple integrated calculators in some versions make sure of the accuracy of your math as you go through the steps.
Software breaks the filing process down into easy-to-follow steps.
Once you've finished preparing your return, you then e-file to submit, sign and pay. If you qualify for a refund, you may either choose to receive a check in the mail or to have your refund automatically deposited into your bank account.
IRS Free File
If your adjusted gross income is $56,000 or less, you are eligible to use the IRS Free File program. IRS Free File provides you cost-free access to tax assistance software. By following a series of simple instructions, you will be guided via the IRS website to see what different software you qualify for, based on certain criteria.
All Free File software is free of charge when filing federal tax returns. However, various amounts are charged depending on the software if you are trying to file state returns.
Be sure to print copies of the filed return for your records before you exit any Free File software program.
