How to Make Charitable Donations

When you are on a tight budget, making charitable donations can be a challenge. But even if you can't afford a financial contribution, you can still help out a worthy cause by volunteering.

The first step involves doing so research. Use the Internet or your phonebook to find out if there is a volunteer center where you live. There could also be an office of volunteer opportunities you can contact for suggestions for nonprofit organizations that need volunteers. Some of the larger organizations might already have a group of regular volunteers and may not need any additional ones. The volunteer center and office of volunteer opportunities will have the best insight for you to help you find out which groups are in need of extra hands.

Some other options to consider when you are looking for ways to donate your time include:

  • Building homes with a group like Habitat for Humanity
  • Helping clean up or leading tours at a nature center, park, or museum
  • Preparing meals for the homeless at a homeless shelter
  • Volunteering at a local school, hospital, nursing home, or senior citizen center

Once you have a list of prospects, examine what each organization needs in terms of time commitments. This will help you determine which ones you'll actually have the necessary time available to help out.

When you've chosen the organizations to which you want to donate your time, contact each one and ask to speak with the organization's program director or the person in charge of volunteer coordination to see if you can set up a time for you to do your volunteer duties. It's better to call ahead first, though, rather than just walking in the door and offering your services.

Many charitable organizations will require you to fill out some application paperwork before you can begin volunteering. Some even require background checks or drug testing. So, be prepared ahead of time for the process to be potentially more involved than you might have expected it to be. Be patient, and don't allow these preliminary safeguards to turn you off volunteering altogether.

All this work will pay off in the end, as you find an organization whose mission and needs fit your own. Being budget-conscious should not mean that you can't be socially conscious as well. Sometimes the most valuable donation you can make is your own time.
