Taking Care of Your Home Improvement Investment: Chimneys, Gutters and Downspouts
Chimneys
Each year before you beginning using your fireplace, inspect your chimney for any noticeable damage. On the outside of the house, look for any loose bricks or mortar or for any flashing that has become dislodged from the area where the chimney meets the roof. Chiseling away the old mortar and replacing it can easily repair simple cracks in the mortar. You can also replace the cap, where the brick meets the flue, in the same way. Be sure to wear goggles for protection while chiseling out the old mortar, and use ready-mix mortar as the replacement. Apply the new mortar with the proper slope to ensure that water drains away from the flue, and follow the mortar instructions carefully to ensure that it dries properly. If the structure of the chimney is in badly damaged consult a professional for repair services.
Before lighting a fire, you should always use a flashlight to look up into the interior structure of the chimney. Check for any obstructions, including bird's nests. Also, be aware of any buildup from past fires that may have accumulated over time. If you notice a significant amount of buildup, make sure to have it properly cleaned, this may be flammable.
Gutters and Downspouts
Gutters and downspouts are often neglected until they become clogged. If this problem is not addressed, rainwater will begin overflowing along the side of the house and create water damage. Exposing your walls and foundation to water can create very costly problems and can rip away at the integrity of the structure. Protect your home by cleaning and repairing gutters regularly. The tools you need to clean out your gutters are goggles, gloves and a spade. While wearing the goggles and gloves, scoop out the leaf debris from the gutter using the spade. The debris can then be racked and placed in a trash receptacle. Cleaning gutters and downspouts can be a daunting task depending on the size of your home and the height of the roof. Seeking professional services can ensure that the job is done correctly and reduce the potential for accidents.
