Budgeting Is Easier Than You Think

Learning to budget can seem difficult. Even people with good spending habits can get off track after they start putting kids through school, or when their work life speeds up. No matter the reason, spending money without a plan can lead to unexpected shortfalls when expenses exceed income.

If you've got more money going out than coming in, don't panic. Nearly everyone has been in that situation at one time or another. Making smart arrangements can minimize the impact of your current shortfall, and can give you the breathing room to create a budget you can live with.

Find your starting point

The best place to start is with an accurate picture of your current finances. Print your bank statements, grab a highlighter, and color code your spending into expenses like Housing, Auto, Entertainment, Food, Utilities, and Insurance. A three-month average for each expense is a good starting budget. Just make sure that expenses are less than your income.

Get everybody on board

If you're married or have kids, make sure you enlist everyone in your efforts to get on a spending plan. Being on the same page as your spouse about finances can avoid conflicts over money. Making kids aware that money might be tight for a while. It lets them know why they can't have what they want right now. It also gives them the chance to learn good money habits early.

Make a date with success

Set aside at least an hour a week to review your budget. Without a designated time, it's easy to put it off. Look at what you've spent the last week, your current cash balance, and which bills and expenses you can pay in the week to come.

Leave room for fun

Keep in mind that a budget helps you spend your money on what you want and need, rather than on late fees and overdrafts. If you think ahead now, you can create a spending plan that leaves room for fun, while avoiding the hassles of overspending.
