Head Back to School Without Breaking the Bank
If you're gearing up for a new semester, it's easy to get sticker shock. Books, school clothes, tuition, sports-related doctor's visits...the list seems endless and the expenses can add up fast. With a little smart planning, it's easy to take care of everything you need without breaking the budget.
Shop smart for school clothes
Think first and shop later when it comes to back-to-school outfits. Start out by sorting and organizing what's already in the closet into three piles: Still Fits & Looks Good, Old but Serviceable and Worn Out.
After you've determined what you have in your Still Fits & Looks Good pile, then take the time to consider what you'll need to make five complete outfits. Don't forget about necessary accessories, like rain boots, a hat and gloves, a light jacket, and a winter coat.
Once you have a complete list of what you still need, consider searching for your items in a local consignment or resale store before hitting the mall. You may also be able to trade in the items from the Old but Serviceable pile and get cash to go towards what you still need to purchase.
Budget for time and money
A new semester always comes with new commitments for extracurricular activities. Really map out your schedule to avoid taking on too many activities. Remember that it's just as important to spend time relaxing with family and friends, and find a way to say no when extracurricular activities get to be too much.
Consider your transportation
With the cost of gas these days, transportation to and from school and after-school activities can get expensive fast. Consider using some form of public transportation. You may even think about starting a carpool. Not only will you save money, but you'll have the chance to get to know your fellow riders a little better!
Save money on physicals and immunizations
More than likely, the start of a new semester means a visit to the doctor, whether you're in need of a physical or suffering from flu-season sniffles.
If the cost of visiting a doctor is an issue, most communities offer free or low-cost clinics to help local families offset school-related medical expenses. Contact your local health department to find out what's available in your area. Most local health departments also offer free childhood immunizations.
