The Grad School Application and Testing Process

When applying to graduate school, planning is the name of the game. The application process takes plenty of time, and simply gathering all of the necessary materials can feel like a job in of itself. Begin your process by finding the application deadlines for each of the programs that attract your interest. You can find this information on your selected schools' websites, specifically within your desired programs' departments.

Knowing the deadlines is critical to allotting enough time for compiling your application materials. For many prospective graduate students, the total process involves months of preparation. Be aware of any parts of the application that carry significant time considerations as well, such as your test date.

The Program Application

To increase your chances of being accepted to a graduate program, you should target and apply to several different schools of varying prestige. You should definitely aim for the best schools on your list, but also include some middle and lower limit schools in case your first choices do not work out.

Each program will have its own application that you will need to complete. Many of these applications are only available online, so check with your desired program's website to find out exactly what you will need to begin.

No matter what the prestige level of the school, you should be genuinely interested in attending all of the schools on your list. That way, an acceptance letter will always be welcomed news.

Standardized Test Scores

Check your desired programs' websites to find out exactly which standardized test you are required to take. Most applicants find that they will have to prepare for at least one of the following:

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • GRE Subject Test
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
  • Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
  • Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

Of these tests, several are only offered a few times each year, and they may also require advanced registrations. Pay attention to signup deadlines, and be sure to prepare.

Your program applications and standardized test scores are only part of the total application process. Most programs also require a variety of additional information in order to select their next students. Continue reading about these additional materials so that you can know what else to expect.
