Second Interview Tips
If you've received a call for a second or additional interview, congratulations! This is your chance to truly set yourself apart from the competition. A second interview is usually much more challenging than the firstÑmeaning more in-depth questions, more interviewers, and more expectations of you as a potential employee. Here are some suggestions to help you prepare for this important next step in the hiring process.
Review Your Performance
Set aside the time to mentally review your first interview, and write down any questions or concerns that you may still have. Go back over the experience and make notes on where you need to improve your performance or do further research. Give yourself constructive criticism, but don't discourage yourself!
Know the Schedule
Every company conducts interviews differently. You may simply be called back to the location of your original interview for another discussion with one person or an entire panel of professionals. You may be asked to spend an entire day on-site. Some companies even wine-and-dine their candidates. It's essential to know exactly what to expect, so make sure you ask in advance if you aren't sure.
If the interviewer did not provide specific information about your next meeting, you may want to try to contact your recruiter to learn more. If your interviewer did not specifically welcome additional contact beyond his or her initial call or e-mail, contact the company's front desk and speak with a representative or administrative assistant just to be on the safe side.
Be Well Prepared
Grab a piece of paper and a pen, and rehearse in your head the entire day, step by step. Ask yourself if you've prepared for every detail along the way. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- What Is the Best Route to Take to Make the Interview on Time?
- Will There Be a Panel of Professionals? Are You Prepared for Their Questions?
- Are You Comfortable with Business Etiquette in a Dining Situation?
- Are You Ready to Negotiate Salaries and Benefits if Asked?
Remember to sleep well the evening before your interview. The keys to perfecting your interview are preparation, energy, enthusiasm, and expertise. You've already impressed them onceÑplan ahead in order to earn that position you've always wanted.
