Health Care Costs for Adults

As we age, it's not only natural, but it's important to slow down, step back, and take a look at our lifestyles for places to improve. Maybe we don't get enough sleep, or enough exercise. Maybe we don't manage to include enough healthy foods, like lean meats, fruits and vegetables in our diets. Considering all the ways we can live a healthier lifestyle, it is incredibly important at any stage of life, and whether you're 15 or 50, there are always ways to make a positive change. The better care we take of ourselves now, the longer and better our lives will be in the future.

Not only do good health choices affect the way we feel, but they profoundly affect our quality of life in the long run. Choosing a healthy lifestyle at any age can make a big impact on our healthcare costs, and this can really affect our life choices, especially as we age.

So after you've decided to make some changes, where's the best place to start?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 40% of all deaths in America are attributed to tobacco use, physical inactivity, poor diet, or alcohol abuse. If you make the choice now, at any age, to take the important steps to eliminate bad health habits, you can dramatically alter their negative effects on your health. Remember, it's never too early or too late to improve your quality of life and enjoy the benefits of good health.

Physical Activity for Older Adults

Of all of the solutions for feeling younger and preventing health problems as you age, physical activity is one of the easiest and most effective. Physical activity doesn't only mean going to the gym — although it is certainly an option! It simply means working aerobic activity, such as walking or jogging, and muscle-strengthening activities into your daily routine, so your body continues to stay active.

Muscle-strengthening activities can include yoga, heavy gardening, or work with resistance bands or weights.

If you're interested in becoming more active but are worried about the limitations of a chronic condition, such as arthritis, a disability or a heart problem, talk to your doctor. Together, you can develop a program that gets you moving and is mindful of any conditions you may face.
